Intent

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. It helps children and young people to stay healthy and safe, while preparing them to make the most of life and work. At Chalk Ridge Primary, our PSHE curriculum aims to create articulate and thoughtful children who will become responsible, respectful adults of the world. Children will consider themselves important citizens within the school community.

The National Curriculum for PSHE aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Have a clear understanding of being healthy in both body and mind
• Explore different relationships
• Understand rules and laws of living in the wider world
• Understand their own personal and physical development
• Have a clear understanding of right and wrong
• Have a clear understanding of safe and unsafe

Implementation

As PSHE is a non-statutory subject there is no formal National Curriculum guidance. Instead this has been outsourced to The PSHE Association on behalf of the Government. At Chalk Ridge, we are using the 1decision programme which has been created and kitemarked by The PSHE Association to ensure we are teaching high quality PSHE sessions. 

Below you will find our whole school overview of the timings and modules taught within our PSHE curriculum. This ranges from Years 1-6. EYFS have PSHE embedded within all areas of their curriculum.

Impact

All pupils will develop their knowledge, skills and attributes needed to build and keep healthy relationships, good physical and emotional health, make safe and informed decisions as well as preparing for life and work within the modern world.

We measure impact through:

• Pupil conferencing – giving children the opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions on the modules taught as well as identifying any areas needed for further development.
• Work evidence reviews – Identifying children’s understanding through recorded tasks within PSHE sessions.
• Pupil voice within lessons when participating in class discussions.

Observation of teaching and learning will show:

• Teachers have a good level of subject knowledge.
• Children are given the opportunity to share and explore topics in a variety of different ways as supported through 1Decision provision.
• Children are curious and confident sharing ideas and asking questions.
• Children’s misconceptions are addressed.
